Strong Sportsmanship Shows at WEXCR Round 1

Austin Erb wrecked at WEXCR Round 1 a King Knob while going up a slight uphill. He caught a bad rut causing him to go off the track into a tree and briars. After many tries, he was unable to get his bike back on the track. He walked to find help but never found anyone, so he returned to his quad to wait for help. After several minutes, Lucas Shaw stopped to help. They struggled and got the quad back up the hill and onto the track along with the help of another rider named Jeff. Once they were back on the track, they all took off racing again.

Erb rides a 2010 YFZ450X in the Open B 16-21 Class. At the finish, he noticed he was ahead of Shaw and stopped at the start of the ribbons to wait for him. Once Shaw arrived, Erb pointed for him to cross the finish line first. Shaw said, “You don’t have to do this,” but Erb insisted. Erb said, “If it wasn’t for his help, I wouldn’t have crossed the finish line at all. He earned that spot.”

Lucas Shaw said that he and Austin have known one another for many years and have become close friends both on and off the track. “If I was stuck, I hope someone would help, as well,” he said.

“When Austin pulled over at the end of the race, he didn’t have to do that. I think at that point, we were just happy to see the checkered flag and gain some valuable points toward the championship,” said Shaw.

This is the kind of positive sportsmanship WEXCR is proud to be a part of! Erb’s advice to other rides is to always look in a positive direction. “Good sportsmanship is a key role in all sports and it will go a long way”

Shaw said that his dad has always preached that sportsmanship will go a long way on and off the track. “Who knows, one day it might be you needing a hand…10 seconds!”
